Ellis Island
(A) In the nineteenth century over twelve million of people arrived in New York. They came from all over the world on crowded, dirty ships, but most of them came from Europe. They were often poor and life was difficult for them in their own countries. (B) The journey from their own countries was long and tiring. People went to America because they wanted to make new life for themselves. They got off the ship at tiny Ellis Island in New York Bay. American officials asked them a lot of questions about their families, their jobs and money they had. (C) Very old and sick people and criminals had to return home. In 1907 over a million of immigrants arrived. From Ellis Island the immigrants travelled by boat to New York. So, The city was full of different races, cultures and languages. (D) In New York there was an Irish district , a Jewish district, Little Italy and Halerm where lived ex-slaves. The immigrants usually lived in apartments with six or seven other families. So, their life wasn’t easy!
