Presents in Great Britain
(A) In Britain there are two occasions when people usually give and receive presents: on Christmas and on their birthday. In the past, on the twenty-first birthday, people traditionally received a silver key. It symbolized the opening of the door to the adult life. But today people in Britain become adult at the age of eighteen. So they have the biggest celebration at this time. (B) The custom to give presents on Chrisms dates back from Victorians times. Before that The British used to exchange presents on New Year ’s Eve. These days parents leave presents in stockings for children at night on Christmas Eve. (C) Оn Christmas morning lots of kids believe in Santa Clause. When they wake up in the morning they thought that Santa has visited them in the night and has brought them presents. But gifts for older people and adults are put under the Christmas tree. Then on Christmas morning everyone sits around the tree and opens the presents. (D) Easter is also important holiday. Young children usually receive chocolate eggs at Easter. And people usually give flowers and chocolates to their mothers on Mother’s day. All the guests at a wedding traditionally bring a gift for the bride and groom.
