The history of rice
(A) Rice is not as simple as it seems. It has rich history and many uses. The lives of many people depend on rice. These people live in Indonesia, China, India, Vietnam and Korea. (B) Rice is a very old food. The people of south-east Asia began to grow it 5,555 years ago. In Spain people began to grow it in the eighth or ninth century. Today there are lots of kinds of rice. But three main types are: short, medium and long grained. (C) In India they use basmati rice. It smells delicious. The Chinese prefer medium grained rice. It sticks together and is easier to pick up with chopsticks. In Asia people prefer white rice, while in Europe and America brown rice is very popular for a healthy diet. (D) Rice is not just a food, it can be used to make flour, noodles, wine, vinegar, pepper. They use rice straw to make baskets and mats . The parts they don’t use become animal feed.
