When good things hapen to you, do you immediately call a friend or run over to your coworker’s office to share the joy? If this isn’t your style, you might reconsider. The study ruled out alternative explanations for these findings. For example, personality did not play a role, given that the results were not due to high levels of extraversion in the study’s participants. Peoples’ responses to an individual’s good news are also important. Only when others reacted with genuine enthusiasm did sharing make people happier.

So, happiness is not just the result of sharing joy, rather, it is also a result of sharing good news with the right people. Sharing news about a promotion, a new hire, or a closed sale—contributed to positive moods at work and satisfaction with one’s work. Again, the type of response mattered—that is, employees were happiest when they shared positive events with others who were truly happy for them.
